Saturday Seminars

Train With Purpose.

Elite martial arts seminars designed to elevate your skill, mindset, and teaching—whether you’re a dedicated student, competitor, or instructor.

Leave Sharper Than You Arrived.

'26 Instructors

Once again we have managed to assemble world renown martial art masters in different styles, arts and disicplines.

Lecture Series Presenters

Back by popular demand, plus some new faces! Don't worry, they will be teaching seminars as well!
Ken Tallack Saiko Shihan

Ken Tallack So Shihan
10th Dan Karate

An incredible wealth of knowledge and understanding. His lecture last year was a huge hit! One of the reasons we made sure to have more space this year.

Mike Leclair O'Sensei
8th Dan Karate

We are very happy to announce that we have confirmation that O'Sensei is able to attend this year! Always in high demand and packed mats!

Doug Knispel Kyoshi
8th Dan Jiu-Jitsu

From being in constant demand for seminars to chairman of grading boards we are honoured to host him at our event this year.

Stephen Baranyi Sensei
3rd Dan Karate

His lectures offer a historical insight into martial arts and the samurai. He is also a full time professor at the University of Ottawa. Lucky to have him on board.

Hands On Seminars

This is not a demonstration. This is real training.

Each seminar focuses on principles you can apply immediately—on the floor, in competition, or back at your dojo.

Dedicated students seeking real improvement

Competitors wanting practical edge and efficiency

Instructors looking to sharpen their teaching

Scott Taylor Shihan
6th Dan Jiu-Jitsu

Do not shake his hand, especially if you are on the ground. Known as the "Dirty Demon of Wristlocks", his subtle way of luring you into giving up is well doncumented.

Joe Maadi Sensei
3rd Dan Aikido

Good things come in small packages! But great things come in this complete package: sharp techniques, powerful knowledge and has a "great personality"

Gabriel Chartier Sensei
3rd Dan Karate

With Black belts in many styles, this worldly Budoka excels at pretty much everything he does. Weapons, Kata, Kumite you name it!

Rob Peaker Guro
3rd Dan Arnis and BJJ BB

Do NOT hand this man any sticks, he is lethal - oh wait he is also a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Black Belt... If something goes down you'll be thankful you trained with him!

Lisa Carroll Renshi
4th Dan Karate Jutsu

Just look at how much fun she has "sharing" her martial arts skills - and she has a lot! Dynamic and Energetic, her mats are always a "hit"

Dwayne Diamond Kyoshi
7th Dan Jiu-Jitsu

Speed, Power, Elegance are just a couple of words to describe this powerhouse! Talented in Weapons, Self-defense, striking and ground work.

Marc Duchesneau Hanshi
8th Dan Jiu-Jitsu

Licensed to THRILL, this martial arts master has countless accolades and awards. With over 40+ years of experience his classes are impactful.

Dominque Picard Shidoin
3rd Dan Karate

Don't let her size fool you! Training in Karate, Kung Fu and Kobudo this dynamic instructor will blow your mond!

Michael Smith Shihan
6th Dan Aikido

New to our every changing teaching roster, don't miss your opportunity to train (more like being in a tumble cycle of a washing machine) as he flows and throws.

This Is Your Opportunity to Level Up

If you’re serious about your training—or responsible for others’ development—this seminar delivers value that lasts long after the mats are cleared.

It's Back!

Tournament

This year's Kingston Kicks is back with some exciting news!

734 Montreal St, Kingston, ON K7K 3J4

info@kingstonkicks.com

Start time is 10 am

Criteria for judging Kata:

Technical Performance:

This category focuses on the "correctness" of the form according to the specific karate style (e.g., Shotokan, Shito-ryu).

  • Stances (Tachi-kata): Judges look for the correct height, width, and weight distribution of stances like zenkutsu-dachi (front stance) or kokutsu-dachi (back stance).

  • Technique Execution: Precision in blocks, punches, and strikes. This includes "hand-chambering" (hikite) and the correct path of a movement.

  • Transitional Movements: How a competitor moves from one stance to the next. It must be fluid and stable without "wobbling" or unnecessary head movement.

  • Correct Breathing: Breathing should be synchronized with techniques, often silent but controlled, to show internal power and stamina.

  • Conformance: The kata must follow the traditional sequence of moves without omissions or additions.

 Athletic Performance

This category assesses the physical intensity and "spirit" of the practitioner.

  • Speed and Power: Techniques should be executed with "snap" (kime)—a sudden tensing of muscles at the point of impact.

  • Balance: Maintaining a solid center of gravity during difficult turns or kicks.

  • Rhythm and Timing: The performance should not be a steady 1-2-3 count; it must reflect the "phrasing" of the kata, with distinct fast and slow sections.

  • Focus (Zanshin): The competitor must maintain a state of "remaining spirit" and awareness, looking at their imaginary opponents throughout the performance.

Common Scoring Deductions

Judges will reduce points or even disqualify a competitor for the following:

  •  Major Mistakes: Forgetting a move, stopping completely, or falling.

  • Loss of Balance: Even a small stumble or "adjusting" the feet after landing a stance can lead to a 0.1–0.3 point deduction.

  • Theatrics: Excessive "slapping" of the uniform (gi) or chest, or over-the-top facial expressions, is often discouraged and can be penalized.

Saturday Night Social

A wise and very respected mentor of mine once said that budo happens both on and off the mats. Our social connection off the mats allow us to share, laugh and bond.
We want to let you know that, unfortunately, we have to cancel the Saturday event due to a scheduling conflict. We know how much you were looking forward to it, and we’re truly sorry for the inconvenience.

I heard something about a special class?

This year, we’re wrapping up the seminar with something special—a high-energy mixed group class where instructors will rotate in and share their unique styles and insights. It’s a fun, fast-paced way to experience a variety of techniques all in one session!

And for the kids… we’re finishing with an ICE CREAM PARTY! 🍦
They’ve put in the effort, trained hard all day, and now it’s time to kick back, celebrate, and enjoy a well-earned treat!

How much for Spectators?

Bring your friends and family—spectators are welcome FREE on both Saturday and Sunday! Come cheer, support, and be part of the energy all weekend long.

What's the deal with Lectures?

We set out to bring something back that’s often overlooked in martial arts training—the deeper, philosophical side of the journey. Open to students of all levels, this experience dives into the heart of budo—exploring its rich history while unlocking a sharper mental awareness of how your body moves, reacts, and performs.

What is a double elimination tournament?

As we get back into the rhythm of competition, we wanted to give our kumite participants more time on the mats and more chances to grow. Every competitor is guaranteed at least two kumite matches, so you’ll get real experience, shake off the rust, and step off the mat better than you stepped on.
